Russian Сosmism
1992–2020
Cosmism is popular with contemporary artists. Works on this theme are often found among Russian and international artists. One might recall the light installation Terrestrial Echo of Solar Storms by Charles Sandison, which referenced the scientific ideas of Alexander Chizhevsky, a friend and follower of Tsiolkovsky. Makarevich and Elagina’s position differs from that of other artists. They are not euphoric about utopias but nor do they take an ironic position. The artists are fascinated by the paradigm itself: the desire to “remake humankind,” the almost religious ecstasy on the path to a better future, and an internal certainty that everyone must share this fervour.
